My experiences as a sole charge nanny, birth attendant and postnatal doula have shown me how important it is that a family having a trusted woman that they can call on when need be. It was not until I was a mother myself though, that I realised exactly why I was so strongly drawn to this work.
Thankfully, I have experienced first hand how incredible and important it is to have the guidance and wisdom of other women at this precious time of ones life. “Mothering the mother” is something that feels incredibly natural to me, and drawing strongly on the wisdom that I have gathered sitting with families over the past 7 years, I am committed to supporting couples in the way that best meets their needs.
My own birth experiences created a yearning to help other women have rewarding births filled with respect, happiness and a sense of amazement at the act of bringing another being into existence. I welcomed my children in two very different birth experiences, our first son via a caesarean after a long induced labour, and our second son at home, supported my a doctor, midwife and birth attendant.
I was always interested in what has traditionally been womens business, though it was the support that I received in my pregnancy with my second son that guided me to the realization that this was to be the basis of my life’s future career path. In 2003, whilst stumbling along the road to becoming a parent, I came across many different women with various philosophies and ideals.
The wisdom that some of these beautiful women imparted stuck with me, and created for me a new pathway and a new way of thinking about birthing and parenting that has changed my life. Other career and business opportunities have beckoned to me, but I continually came back to the calling of being with birthing women and their families. It was not until 2006 that I decided to begin this work in a more formal sense, and began studying PT.
In 2008 I sat in the Birthing Wisdom circle in Melbourne led by Rhea Dempsey, and learned more about what it is that brings such devotion and passion to this work. I have also completed the Certificate IV in Breastfeeding Education (Counselling) with the Australian Breastfeeding Association, and have been involved with the Association as a member and volunteer for 5 years. I am passionate about normalising breastfeeding, and encouraging women to gather good support around them both before they birth and in the early days, as they adjust to parenthood and the challenges that breastfeeding can sometimes bring.
Although I am very much an advocate for normal physiological childbirth, I also appreciate that everyone has different reasons for choosing their models of care in pregnancy and birth. My role is to support you in the choices that you make, whatever they may be.
Thank you for considering me to support your journey.
